Letter from the Founder

Dear Friend,

One year ago, I left a comfortable job to pursue a dream I have long had: that one day, Africa will be a continent with widespread political stability, rapid economic growth, and meaningful cooperation among nations. I firmly believe that a lack of effective leadership is at the root of many of the political, social, and economic challenges that have prevented us from achieving this dream. My determination to address this issue led me to envision and launch African Leadership Academy.

I came to understand the importance of leadership after observing the impact that one or two individuals – such as Nelson Mandela in South Africa or Wangari Maathai in Kenya – could have in transforming entire nations. African Leadership Academy will be a training ground for many more leaders who will transform our society and lift fellow Africans out of poverty.

At African Leadership Academy, we believe that leaders are made and not born. We also believe that individuals develop their foundation for leadership at a young age. Hence, we seek to establish an institution that will nurture and develop young Africans, preparing them for a lifetime of principled, ethical leadership. After many months of development, we have a robust vision for the Academy, an institution unlike any other.

Africa cannot undo the legacy of colonialism or force foreign nations to provide continued aid. We can, however, develop more effective leaders for our beautiful continent. By increasing the supply of principled, ethical leaders, we can help Africa overcome its troubles and clear a path to prosperity.

This is our mission at African Leadership Academy, and this is my life’s calling. Please join us in our exciting endeavor to change Africa.

Sincerely,

Frederick K. Swaniker
